Abstract

Griffin’s The Question of Animal Awareness (1976) and Animal Minds (2001) enabled and emboldened other disciplines to expand their research to include non-human animals. The creation of a dedicated section on human-animal relationships in sociology’s national professional organization is but one example.

Arnold Arluke is Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Anthropology at Northeastern University and Senior Research Fellow at the Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy. He studies contradictions and conflicts in human-animal relationships -- most recently, the failure to provide adequate veterinary support to pet owners in disadvantaged communities. Website
